Cligmans Dome

The Cligmans Dome is the highest peak in Tennessee as well as along the famous Appalachian Trail , being positioned at an altitude of about 6,643 ft. The Cligmans Dome is situated on the North Carolina and Tennessee state border within the premises of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and is the highest mountain in the park. A cemented road, which remains blocked during the winter season, links the Cligmans Dome to the US Highway 441 close to the Newfound Gap Road. A well-built observation tower was constructed on the Cligmans Dome in 1959, providing an enchanting view of the surrounding mountains, is facilitating the promotion of the site as a prime tourist spot. The site is equipped with picnic tables and running water restrooms for the convenience of the tourists. An air quality monitoring station is operated by the Environmental Protection Agency on the peak. The Cligmans Dome is the second highest point in the eastern part of North America which rises to a height of about 5,000 ft from the enclosing terrain.
The Cligmans Dome which was originally known as the “Smoky Dome”, the name being attributed by the local Scottish and Irish residents, is popular among the Cherokee Indians as “Kuwahi”. It was renamed as the Cligmans Dome , after the famous politician and lawyer Thomas Lanier Clingman, who carried out extensive explorations in that site in the 1850s and actually spent several years there for upgrading the place. He was also a lawyer, a US Congress member and a brigadier general of the Confederate States of America . The Cligmans Dome was formed from faulted and fractured Precambrian rocks covered with the prehistoric Ocoee Supergroup of partly transmogrified sedimentary rock. The real age of the peak is estimated to almost 200-300 million years. The Cligmans Dome is the most conveniently reachable mountain peak in the famous Great Smoky Mountains National Park . A 7 mile road has been opened recently just by the Newfound Gap which leads the way up to a parking space only half a mile from the 50 ft high observation tower. The Cligmans Dome is also accessible through the Appalachian Trail along with the Forney Creek Trail and Forney Ridge Trail.
