The Sweetwater-Lost Sea was explored by Ben Sands, a 13 year old boy in the year 1905. It is said that Sands heard splatters within the caves when he threw mud balls inside a room in the caves. But when people went to that place after listening to his story, water ha vanished from that place. Situated in the foothills of the famous Great Smoky Mountains, the Craighead Caverns including the Sweetwater-Lost Sea have been popular and in use since the times of the Cherokee Indians. From the small natural opening along the side of the mountain, the cave enlarges into a chain of big rooms. “The Council Room” which is placed within a mile from the entrance, is home to an extensive collection of Indian artifacts comprising weapons, arrowheads, jewelries and potteries. The caverns were named after Chief Craighead, a Cherokee Indian. The caverns were the meeting place of the Cherokee and used as saltpeter mines by the Confederate soldiers for the production of gunpowder. The fossil of a Pleistocene jaguar was found in the caverns in 1939 by some explorers. In 1973, the Craighead Caverns have been included in the list of the National Natural Landmarks by the National Park Service and the Lost Sea has been designated as a Register National Landmark by the United States Department of the Interior.
