Big South Fork National river and Recreation Area

Big South Fork National river and Recreation Area is in Tennessee. The area consists of the Big South Fork of the Cumberland River along with the tributaries which flow freely across 90 miles. Big South Fork National river and Recreation Area consists of valleys, picturesque beauty and also features historic and natural characteristics. It is a humid region and heavy rain occurs from December to May, which causes floods.
Big South Fork National river and Recreation Area is a sought after destination among the tourists for the opportunities of recreation. Kayaking, Whitewater Rafting, Horseback Riding, Canoeing, Hiking, Mountain Biking, Fishing, Hunting and Camping are some of the adventure activities that you can indulge in while in the area. The area is being renovated, and looked after by the National Park Service. They are responsible for the proper operation of the facilities provided to the tourists, and proper maintenance, so that the public may derive the maximum benefits out of the area. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, having experience in proper managing of river basins, is in charge of the planning and development of the facilities of this area and acquisition of lands.





Big South Fork National river and Recreation Area is open throughout the year. There are 2 visitor centers in this area - The Kentucky Visitor Center and The Bandy Creek Visitor Center. The Bandy Creek Visitor Center is open all the year round except during Christmas time. The visiting hours from November to May are 8.00 hours to 4.30 hours. The visiting time from June to October is 8.00 hours to 6.00 hours. The timing for The Kentucky Visitor Center from May to October is 9.00 hours to 5.30 hours; variable hours exist from the month of November to April.

There are two campgrounds in Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, one in Tennessee and the other in Kentucky. Bandy Creek Campground in in Tennessee and Blue Heron Campground is in Kentucky. Tourists can reserve these from April to October.
