At the eastern edge of Tennessee, one will find the Blue Ridge and it is identified by high mountains like Great Smoky Mountains. The Highland Rim lies on the western side of the Appalachian Plateau and this highland plain surrounds the Nashville Basin. The Nashville Basin is basically a highly fertile farm country. Again the Pennyroyal Region is located at the northern section of the Highland Rim. The Cumberland Plateau is covered by flat mountains separated by sharp valleys. The Gulf Coastal Plain is the most prominent physiographic region of Tennessee as far as the geography of the state is concerned. The Gulf Coastal Plain extending from the Tennessee River to the Mississippi River is again divided into three sections, the eastern, the western and the central.
