The Appalachian Ridge and Valley Region

The Appalachian Ridge and Valley Region is also known as Ridge and Valley Province. This is actually a physiographic belt within the Appalachian Mountains. The Appalachian Ridge and Valley Region extends from New Jersey in the north to Pennsylvania in the west and West Virginia, Alabama, Tennessee, Virginia and Maryland in the south. The mountains of the Appalachian Ridge and Valley Region can be identified by the long even ridges and smooth valleys in between. The Alleghenies and the Cumberlands, the two significant mountain ranges form the middle portion of the Ridge and Valley Province. You will get the Great Appalachian Valley in the eastern edge of the Appalachian Ridge and Valley Region and The Cumberland Mountains, the Allegheny Front and Walden Ridge in the western side.

The Appalachian Ridge and Valley Region is marked by its alternating beds of hard and soft Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. The whole valley appears like wrinkles and these wrinkles are considered to be the hallmark of the Appalachian Ridge and Valley Region province. You will be finding flat sedimentary strata in the zone where this physiographic province extends from New York to Alabama in the west and Precambrian metamorphic rocks in the east. It has been estimated that the Appalachian chain is about 300 to 400 millions old. The Appalachian plateau lies in the northeastern United States and it is known to extend from the Adirondacks in the north to the Gulf Coastal Plain in the south through Pennsylvania, Ohio, Tennessee and Kentucky. The plateau lies between the Central Lowlands in the west and the Ridge and valley region in the east. Thus, the Appalachian Ridge and Valley Region lies at the southeast of the Appalachian Plateau. It is indeed a beautiful scene to look at the long ridges waiting in a line with low patches of land in between.
