The Highland Rim

Tennessee is a prominent Southern United State and it is known for its varied physiographic regions. In this context The Highland Rim must be discussed. The Highland Rim is not exactly a physiographic region of Tennessee rather it is a geographical term which is used to signify the area in Tennessee around the Central Basin. The Highland Rim is located in the northwestern corner of the Basin.

The Northern Highland Rim is just few miles away from the north of the main Nashville and then it moves on towards the Kentucky border and here it is popularly called the Pennyroyal. And the Western Rim is found in the west of Nashville and from there it extends towards the western valley of the Tennessee River. The Eastern Rim originates from 50 miles east of Nashville and this pert is bordered by a higher physiographic region, the Cumberland Plateau. The Southern part of the Highland Rim is farthest from Nashville and it is bordered by Alabama. The Highland Rim is a continuous physiographic region and certain divisions should not be counted as an usual feature of the Rim.

It is interesting to note that though the Highland Rim has been termed as “highland” yet it lies just thousand feet above the sea level and in the south eastern part near the Cumberland Plateau, it is only 1, 400 feet high due to certain interruptions. But it is obvious that the Highland Rim is higher than the basin it surrounds. The Highland Rim is identified by ridges and valleys with few beautiful low hills. And this Physiographic region is well watered by the numerous perennial streams and frequent waterfalls. The waterfalls at times delineate the Highland Rim from the Basin.
